Joining the elite ranks of Concacaf champions, Club Deportivo Águila of El Salvador made history fifty years ago by overcoming Suriname's SV Robinhood in the two-legged 1976 tournament final at San Salvador’s Estadio Cuscatlán.
The opening leg on February 13, 1977, saw the hosts dominate in a 5:1 victory. Águila’s clinical attack featured goals from Moises Zepeda Gonzalez (20’), Carlos Vargas (26’, 89’), and Felix Pineda (40’, 79’ pen).
Two days later, the Surinamese side fought back. Robinhood triumphed 1:0 in the second match on the strength of a 56th-minute goal by Nissar Nathoe. Because aggregate score was not used as a tiebreaker at the time, the result sent the series into extra time to determine the champion.
In the high-stakes added period, Águila regained control. Strikes from Zepeda Gonzalez (93’), Ismael Diaz (112’), and Luis Baltazar "Pele" Ramirez Zapata (117’) secured a 3:2 victory on the day. Remie Olmberg (95’) netted the lone extra-time goal for Robinhood, but it wasn't enough to stop the Salvadoran side from lifting their first international trophy.
"Robinhood was a very physically strong team," Ramirez Zapata recalled in a 2012 interview. "They had four or five players in European second-division clubs, so the two games weren't easy for us."
Robinhood, competing in their first Champions Cup final since 1972, had qualified after winning their ninth Surinamese league title in 1976. Their head coach, Ronald Kolf, later reflected on the tactical gap: "We paid the price for not adapting [to Águila's style]," Kolf told El Gráfico in 2011. "Águila had a great team... Their style of play left us without any counter-actions."
Founded in 1926 and based in San Miguel (138 km east of the capital), Águila earned their place in the tournament after winning their ninth domestic league championship. With this victory, they became the second Salvadoran club to lift the Concacaf trophy, following Alianza FC’s 1967 triumph.
"I was the playmaker, but I scored often because I arrived late into the penalty area," remembered Ramirez Zapata. "Ismael 'El Cisco' Diaz lured defenders away, which allowed me to pounce on loose balls. The team had a core foundation built since 1971, and our main motivation was that we had never won a Concacaf title."
Under the guidance of head coach Conrado Miranda—who captained El Salvador to gold at the 1954 Central American & Caribbean Games—Águila’s path to the final was grueling. They won a Central American triangular group over Alianza FC and Aurora FC (Guatemala) before eliminating Nicaragua’s Diriangen FC.
In the semifinals, Águila faced Mexico’s Club León. After a 1:1 draw in the first leg, the second match ended in controversy. León abandoned the pitch in the 32nd minute while leading 2:1 following an on-field brawl. Concacaf subsequently awarded Águila a 2:0 forfeit victory, clearing their path to the final.
The 1976 title served as a springboard for several players. Five years later, Ramirez Zapata was joined by Águila teammates Mario Castillo and Joaquín Ventura on El Salvador's roster for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. It was there that Zapata cemented his legacy, scoring the first and only World Cup goal in Cuscatleco history.
